ADeL Privacy Policy

ADeL Privacy Policy

Last Updated: December 4, 2019

The Anti-Doping e-Learning platform (ADeL), created and managed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), offers access to all topics related to clean sport and anti-doping. It offers courses for athletes, coaches, doctors, administrators and anyone interested in learning more about anti-doping and protecting the values of clean sport.

This privacy policy describes how your personal information is collected, used, shared and otherwise managed in connection with your use of ADeL.

If we make material changes to this policy, we will ask you to review its terms and re-accept them prior to logging in to your account.

1.            Information We Collect and the Ways We Use It

Account information: To access courses on ADeL, you will be asked to create an account and to provide all or some of the following information:

  • a username and password you select;
  • your name and email address;
  • the country (and if applicable, state) you compete for;
  • the gender category you compete in;
  • your age range;
  • your sport;
  • your role (such as an athlete, ADO employee, parent, coach, student, etc.);
  • You may also choose to provide us with your federation or organization name, sport discipline, Athlete ID, and the name of an upcoming sporting event you are registered for; and
  • Once registered, you may choose to upload a photo to your account.

We use this information to:

  • Create and manage your account;
  • Assign the most relevant available courses to you (all courses remain available to you in the course library); and
  • Assign your account to a sport federation, a national anti-doping organization or another sporting organization that is using ADeL as part of the education component of its anti-doping program. See the Use by Other Organizations below for more details.

Courses you take: When you take courses on ADeL, we collect your course subscriptions, test responses, test results, and the completion status with respect to the courses. We use this information to provide you with completion certificates when you successfully pass a course.

Log data: When you log on to ADeL, we collect certain log information automatically, including your Internet Protocol (IP address), page requests, courses completed, and date and time of access. We use this information to operate the ADeL platform, troubleshoot user issues on the platform, and improve ADeL functionality.

Statistics and Research: As part of WADA’s role in the fight for doping-free sport under the World Anti-Doping Code, we may aggregate certain Account and Course information to create statistics about anti-doping education and to conduct research about attitudes toward doping. Should WADA provide such information to third-party researchers, we will ensure it is aggregated and anonymized and that it is not associated with any individual user.

We process your personal information with your consent, as needed to provide you with the ADeL platform and its features, and as needed to foster and promote anti-doping education in accordance with our global mandate and interests as leader in the fight for doping-free sport.

2.            Use by Other Organizations

Anti-doping organizations (like international federations or national anti-doping organizations) and other sporting organizations (such as regional anti-doping organizations and continental sport associations) are required to implement and conduct education programs as part of their anti-doping program.

As part of its mandate to foster and promote anti-doping education, and to harmonize and enhance anti-doping programs around the world, WADA allows these organizations to use ADeL to implement their education programs. Organizations are responsible for notifying you if they use ADeL in this way, and of providing you with details about how your information will be handled.

If an organization wishes to use ADeL for this purpose, WADA will grant certain administrative rights to the organization that will enable it to monitor course completion for users falling within its anti-doping program (for example, if the international judo federation uses ADeL for its anti-doping education program, it would be granted administrative rights over all users who selected “Judo” as their sport). Organizations that have these rights would also be able to view Account information and to assist you with support requests like a request to reset your password. Where an administrative account is not an appropriate solution for a specific organization and cannot be granted (e.g., where this would result in access rights that are broader than necessary), WADA may, upon request, export certain course completion information for a subset of users associated with that organization.

3.            Sharing and Location of Your Information

WADA will not share your personal information with third parties except as described in this policy.

WADA and its service providers: ADeL is operated and managed by WADA from its Montreal (Canada) office and the platform itself is hosted in Canada. WADA uses Canadian and Switzerland-based service providers to host and maintain the platform. Canadian and Swiss data protection and privacy laws have been deemed to provide adequate protection by a number of regional and national data protection agencies, as well as the European Commission. WADA staff located in one of our regional offices (in Lausanne, Switzerland; Tokyo, Japan; Montevideo, Uruguay; or Cape Town, South Africa) also have access to the accounts of users associated with a country falling within their respective region.

Other organizations in sport: If your ADeL account is managed by an authorized organization other than WADA (see Section 2, above), this organization will have access to your Account information and to the Courses you take. This organization is responsible for notifying you if it uses ADeL and has access to your ADeL information so that you may understand any additional locations from which your ADeL information will be accessed. All anti-doping organizations, including WADA, are responsible for protecting your information in accordance with the International Standard for the Protection of Privacy and Personal Information.

Legal and compliance: WADA may disclose your information to governmental and other authorities where required by law or compulsory legal process and to other organizations in the case of investigating a breach of an agreement or a contravention of law; to detect, suppress or prevent fraud; or to establish, exercise or defend a legal claim. In the event your personal information is transferred to another country, including Canada, it will be subject to the laws of that country and may be disclosed to or accessed by the courts, law enforcement, and other public authorities where required by law or compulsory legal process.

4.            Cookies and Social Media

We use cookies on ADeL. A cookie is a small piece of data that a website stores on the user’s computer or mobile device. In order to function, these cookies collect certain technical information about this device, such as the Internet Protocol (IP) address, browser type and version, device type, time zone setting, browser plug-in types and versions, operating system and platform.

We use a session cookie that is necessary for ADeL to function - it allows you to log in and remembers other necessary account information (such as which courses you have been assigned according to your user role). We also use a persistent cookie to store users’ preferences (language preference, for example).

We display WADA’s Facebook page and Twitter feeds on the ADeL platform. If you interact with these pages or feeds (for example, by liking a post), Facebook or Twitter will drop an open format cookie on your device. These cookies are not within our control and interactions with these features are governed by the privacy policy of Facebook and Twitter, as applicable.

You can control certain cookie settings through your browser settings by visiting or Disabling cookies entirely may affect your ability to use the platform or may prevent the platform from remembering your user preferences.

5.            Safeguards and Retention of your Personal Information

WADA shall take appropriate measures, including administrative, technical, physical and contractual measures, to protect personal information in our custody and control against theft, loss and unauthorized access, use, modification and disclosure.

We restrict access to your personal information on a need-to-know basis to employees and authorized service providers who require access to fulfill their designated functions. Before granting administrative rights to a national anti-doping organization, sport federation or other organization, we take steps to validate the identify of the requester and limit their access to users affiliated with the sport, organization or country they are responsible for.

In the event that you delete your ADeL account, WADA will delete your personal information as soon as reasonably possible and not more than one (1) month following the date on which you delete your account, unless required to retain it due to legal requirements or to defend ourselves against legal claims. As long as you keep your ADeL account active, your Account information and the Course you take will be maintained in your ADeL profile in accordance with this policy. Log data is purged on a monthly basis.

6.            Your Rights and Choices

You can update your account information through the platform at any time by logging in to your account, navigating to your user account page, and selecting “edit”. You can also withdraw your consent at any time by deleting your account from within the “edit” page by selecting “cancel account”.

You may also have certain rights under applicable laws and under the ISPPPI, subject to applicable exemptions, including rights to access, correct and/or delete your information, the right to oppose the processing of your information, and the right to lodge a complaint with your national data protection authority or to obtain other remedies with respect to unlawful processing of your information.

If your account is managed by a sport federation, national anti-doping organization or other organization, these organizations may choose to make the use of ADeL to take and complete anti-doping courses a mandatory element of their anti-doping program, or a pre-requisite to participating in a particular sporting event. If this is the case, refusing to do so may prevent you from being able to compete in sporting events or otherwise participate in organized sport. These decisions are made and managed by the relevant organization in accordance with its anti-doping rules, and you should contact the relevant organization directly if you have questions.
